Scheduling:

This course is comprised of a 1.5 hour webinar presentation, 30 minute Q & A session and a short online assessment. The short assessment to evaluate individual learning will occur in a program called ClassMarker, after the conclusion of the webinar presentation.

The course may require 1-2 hours to complete the assessment following the webinar.

Trainer Bios

Gwendolyn Wyard has worked in organic certification and policy for over 28 years. Prior to SOS, Wyard served for more than a dozen years as the Vice President of Regulatory and Technical Affairs for the Organic Trade Association (OTA) where she worked on the development of policy strategy through regulatory engagement in the interest of OTA's mission and its members. While at the trade association, Wyard was the lead developer and author of the association’s Organic Fraud Prevention Guide, now the industry standard reference for excellence in achieving integrity across complex organic global supply chains. In her early career, Wyard was an organic farmer, an organic inspector, and served as Oregon Tilth’s Technical Specialist in organic policy and technical review of materials for use in organic products. She holds an advanced degree in Fermentation Science, served on the OMRI Board of Directors for 12 years and was the North American representative on the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) Advisory Board.

Gwendolyn is a leading expert in:

Organic standards and certification systems and she authored the first and only GUIDE on developing an organic proud prevention plan which ultimately stood up a corresponding organic fraud prevention program. The GUIDE is THE industry standard reference for excellence in achieving integrity across complex organic global supply chains. Gwendolyn also together with the leading expert in food fraud prevention (Dr. John Spink) developed multiple trainings on how to develop an organic fraud prevention plan.

Conducting vulnerability assessments & control plans specific to organic operations. Under SOE, the requirements for certified operations to develop an organic fraud prevention plan (and the parts contained therein) is based on the OFPS Guide & Program.

Organic Certification generally, and specifically for retail operations. Other unique areas of expertise include organic textiles, supplements, pet food, and personal care.

Food science and processing generally, and specifically for organic operations. Areas of focus include product research and development, organic ingredient sourcing, contamination prevention methods, fermented products, pest control and complex compliance issues related to minor ingredients allowed in organic products.

Education and training to help organic businesses understand the basics about the organic requirements and communicate why their organic products are better for the planet, people and the economy (regenerative, climate-smart and sustainable).

 

Johanna Phillips' roots are firmly planted in the fertile ground of agriculture, thanks to a youth spent on her family's third-generation Idaho farm. An active participant in 4-H and farm operations, she's built a lifelong quest to merge food production with sustainability and health. Johanna continues her agricultural endeavors at her farm in Eagle, ID, and through a beef production venture with her family.

As an organic certification veteran, Johanna has a comprehensive grasp of food and agriculture regulations. Her dedicated work ensures farmers succeed through equitable regulation enforcement, protects sector integrity by combating fraud, and simplifies complex regulations for industry stakeholders. With a robust skill set in livestock, processing, and crop production issues, Johanna's insight is a valuable asset.

As Idaho's Organic Program Manager, Johanna adeptly navigated certification and regulatory needs, playing a key role in an interagency fraud investigation that led to a significant conviction. Before her current role at SOS, she spearheaded Ecocert USA's certification division and provided invaluable technical assistance across Ecocert's global network. A past board member of the Organic Trade Association and seasoned speaker at key organic industry events, Johanna is a recognized voice in the ever-evolving sphere of organic certification.

Grades and Certificates:

IOIA will follow-up with you within 30 days of the completion of the webinar with your course outcome. A short online assessment will be available to participants for one week following the course. Participants who attend the session and earn at least 75% on the assessment will receive a Certificate of Completion. Those who fail the exam or choose to audit without taking the exam will receive a Letter of Participation.

Certificates:  Participants who meet minimum requirements will receive an IOIA Certificate of Completion. 

Letters of Participation:  Participants who attend the webinar but opt out of the assignment submission or fail to achieve a passing score will receive an IOIA Letter of Participation, to document their attendance.
